The Back 9

The scenic, riverside back nine - more a parkland design - plays very differently, being both shorter and more "target golf". The par-4 10th requires a long-arrow-straight drive and the par-3 11th is one of the toughest in Niagara. The view from the 12th tee over the landing area below is a bit unnerving with the river meandering everywhere. The finishing holes along the Welland River are very scenic and heavily treed and require good course management. The par-4 17th is a temptress with very little room for error going into the small, well-guarded green. The finishing hole is a short, uphill, dog-leg right that big-hitters can reach off the tee for a birdie opportunity.

10th Hole
The dramatic landforms of the back 9 begin on this par 4, where a drive needs 190 yards to clear two gulleys and reach the gentle bend of the fairway landing area. Finding the green in regulation means not finding the trees which line the final 150 yards in.

11th Hole
Riverview's signature hole is one of the prettiest in Niagara golf. This spectacular par 3 is best tamed with a non-stop journey from elevated tee to elevated green. Any tee shot missing the green should be short to the front. Shots to the left will have more difficult access to the lofty green, while the right side consists of hillside lies and an OB fence.

12th Hole
The panorama from the tee of this par 4 reveals two main options for avoiding the creek that snakes through the hole. A 150-yard drive to the right finds the easiest landing area, but leaves the toughest approach shot. Players who fly the creek straightaway with a 230-yard tee shot will have a more makeable chip over the creek and onto a tight green.

13th Hole
Trees to the left and a valley to the right make this par 4 a tough scoring hole when drives leave the fairway. Tee shots finding the 150-yard marker at the dog-leg get a clear shot and the wide, flat putting surface. But approaches that come up short could face a tricky chip from the undulating apron protecting the green.

14th Hole
Keep tee shots centre or centre-right on the fairway of this challenging par 4. Drives to the left will be ripe pickings for a strategically placed pond. The key to scoring on this hole is landing the approach shot below the pin. The shaded, sloping green can be lightning fast and easy to three-putt.

15th Hole
Straight shooters are rewarded on this par 5. Key challenges are avoiding water on the left 50 yards shy of the hole, then hitting the sloped green on the first try. Even short chips from either side will have trouble holding the narrow putting surface. Once on, downhill or lateral putts can be even tougher.

16th Hole
Club selection on this deceptive par 3 will depend on the wind, and on the pin placement on the spacious two-tiered green. Don't leave yourself putting from above the cup.

17th Hole
Any errant tee shots on this par 4 should miss to the more forgiving right-hand side, and avoid tree trouble to the left. After that, accuracy is required. Approaches that miss should be short and to the front, as the gently rolling green is well protected by a river, pond, sand trap and towering trees.

18th Hole
In the final tee box, ignore the temptation to align yourself with the green which waits behind a willow tree and a bunker. And avoid sending tee shots down the bank on the right. Stick to the left-center hilltop fairway, or a short par 4 can quickly become a scoring challenge.
